Breaking Ground

Jason shows off his tiller handling skills. Even though we are putting in raised garden beds, we decided to add greater depth of soil by tilling the existing ground. This should give us an extra 5 inches of soil in addition to the 10 inches that will be added into the garden boxes. It took about 4 hours to get the ground completely tilled and raked smooth. Luckily there are several earthworms in residence. They should help keep the soil healthy.

Josie and Seamus make great site supervisors. While we worked, the dogs kept us company. Josie thought the smallest bit of shade was the place to be. Seamus, however, had to check out our progress every so often. No slacking allowed here!

After working all afternoon we finally got the beds tilled, raked, and the bed frames back in place. The top soil & compost mix should be delivered in a few days. Thankfully the weather has been beautiful here. Let's hope is stays beautiful until all the beds are filled.

Looks great!! I read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle a couple of weeks ago and have been trying to decide the best way to "eat local." I wanted to put in a garden myself but I'll be gone most of the summer and veggies won't wait for me to get back. What's on the planting schedule??

Hi Edie
so happy that you've been able
to start an organic garden.
i can't imagine how busy you must have been with this project.
i hope it goes well for you.
sometime when your not busy with your new hobby, or going to the gym, or trying to get out with your husband on weekends and i'm not so busy dealing with all the less important issues that i mentioned in a separate email. then we can get together. if i'm remembering
correctly you use to spend a little time in logan county on sundays?
i couldn't drive to see you bc of my illness and it's probably to far to drive. but even a break from your schedule, maybe 5 minutes every week or two, or hell 5 minutes a month is better than nothing.
